In line with the start of SeaWeek 2024, the annual Fish of the Year competition run by @emr_nz has officially kicked off!! Head over to www.mountainstosea.org.nz/fish to cast your vote.

This year AUUC is supporting the Basking Shark.

Once abundant in some waters around New Zealand, the basking shark, the second largest fish in the world, is now a rare species to spot. In the past, aggregations of hundreds of basking sharks could be found off the coast of Kaikoura and Bank’s peninsula. Unlike their toothy cousins, these sharks are filter feeders, swimming through the water filter feeding zooplankton and crustaceans in the water column. They favour coastal reagions with high plankton abundance and productivity.

The major threats to basking sharks are directed fisheries and incidental bycatch in commercial and artisanal (traditional or small scale) fisheries. Basking sharks are protected under the Wildlife Act 1953. This means it is illegal to hunt, kill or harm basking sharks within New Zealand’s Territorial Sea and Exclusive Economic Zone (200 nm limit around New Zealand).

We were treated to a stunning (and a little frosty) few days down in Taupō last weekend. With snow capped volcanoes watching over us, we had the lake virtually to ourselves as we enjoyed tubing, water skiing and some diving!

Wow! A massive thank you to everyone who showed up to our scuba speaker night last Tuesday.

With over 60 people in attendance this is, so far, one of the biggest events we’ve hosted this year!

Wow! A massive thank you to everyone who showed up to our scuba speaker night last Tuesday.

With over 60 people in attendance this is, so far, one of the biggest events we’ve hosted this year!

Nick Shears is an Associate Professor within the Institute of Marine Science here at UoA. He will talk about how scuba diving is used in marine research and how you could use it to open up career and research pathways in marine science.

A few of our members were treated to a pearler of a day out at the Noises yesterday. Highlights include a great company, lunch on Rakino island, and spotting a diverse range of marine life such as rays, octopuses, and a nudibranch!

Our friends over at @emr_nz are running their annual Fish of the year competition, helping raise awareness about the diversity of fish here in Aotearoa New Zealand!

AUUC are officially backing the Yellow moray eel (Gymnothorax prasinus) for Fish of the Year / Te Ika o Te Tau!

We think it's a treat seeing the friendly face of a yellow moray peeking out of a hole when you're on a dive!

Remember:🎵When the jaws open wide, and there's more jaws inside, that's a moray!🎵

AUUC has been very proud of Under Pressure but with more than 400 members to take diving we are ready to upgrade. The club put a lot of thought into the setup of this boat when it was bought, and it's proven very practical. Sharing in case anyone is looking for a dependable boat, towable nationwide, fast (150 HP), stable, and able to safely reach all the main spots (Mokes, Astrolabe Reef, Aldermen and many more) without spending a lot in fuel. Please pass this on to anyone you think might want a boat for the summer! #sellboat #underpressure #diveboat
